Going down a storm
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom fashion retailer Monsoon has grown from one retail outlet in 1973 to a chain of about 160 Monsoon and Accessorize stores in 1997. Staff numbers have nearly doubled in two years to almost 2,000. The company hopes to open 10 Monsoon stores and 16 Accessorize stores during 1997, and aims to have one of the top ten retail sites in each town. The average Monsoon store size has doubled during the 1990s to about 1,500 square feet, but the company aims to have as little ancillary space as possible. Monsoon prefers to lease property and to look for leases under 15 years.

Double vision
Article Abstract:
A new shopping centre is expected to be opened in March 1999 in Penzance, Cornwall, England, after it was originally planned in 1988. The development site was purchased for 625,000 pounds sterling in 1998 by brothers Robert and David Pulford, who formed Charville Estates to develop the site. The scheme took so long to develop because of problems with securing a well-known retailer and obtaining financial backing, which was eventually received from English Partnerships. The main retailers will be Littlewoods and Argos.

Transforming dust into gold
Article Abstract:
Laing Homes are building a new housing estate on 9ha of land which previously housed the Glaxo Wellcome research establishment. Some 7ha of the 40.5ha site at Langley Park, Beckenham, Kent, will also be used for development by Joseph Samuel Developments and 16ha will be left as open land. Laing Homes Land Director Sean Ellis points out his company is able to save 5% of their costs by being able to reuse some of the materials on the site. Preparation of the site took one year before building work could start.
