Article Abstract:

The European Union's (EU) single market and the abolition of border controls has had major implications for the distribution industry, removing the need for separate distribution operations in each country. The growing trend towards centralisation and the harmonisation of laws should also reduce the need to carry wide stock ranges as products become standardised across the EU. The location and costs of warehousing could be expected to be of prime importance in the new single market, but an overriding concern is the need to provide rapid delivery to customers. Environmental concerns and problems associated with lack of inter-modal transport are also important issues.

The retail sector in the Dorset town of Bournemouth has traditionally been divided into two areas, one situated in the west and focused on the Commercial Road, where Marks and Spencer is based, and the other to the east of Old Christchurch Road. Developers have been looking for some time at ways of overcoming this problem. However, no new scheme can really be successful unless it receives the full approval of Marks and Spencer.
