Keeping shopping on the home front
Article Abstract:
Shopping centres in Surrey, England, are undergoing refurbishment and some have been granted permission to extend facilities in order to prevent shoppers using alternative shopping areas. Towns in Surrey must provide adequate shopping facilities in a variety of outlets to prevent an exodus of shoppers to central London. Facilities in Croydon have been improved with 30 million pounds being spent on renovations to the Whitgift Centre. Guildford and Woking have both ensured that large department stores, which are very popular with customers, feature strongly in plans to extend shopping areas.

Spurred into preventative action
Article Abstract:
The Trafford Centre development planned by Manchester Ship Canal Co at Dumplington could have a serious impact on efforts to revival the retail sector in Greater Manchester's satellite towns. Stockport is currently the strongest of the retail satellites, and believes that it will be able to compete with the Trafford Centre. However, this may not be the case for smaller towns such as Urmiston, Oldham and Hyde.
