Mayor headache
Article Abstract:
The new mayor of London, England, scheduled to be elected in May 2000, will have the power to intervene in development plans involving tall buildings, a riverside site, more than 200 residential units, more than 200 parking spaces or more than 4 ha of land. He or she will be able to order the refusal of a developer's strategic application, regardless of the decision of the local borough council, and will also be able to establish a strategic plan for the city and request the Secretary of State to call in planning applications. It will be necessary for the mayor to be consulted about all strategic site proposals presented by the city boroughs.

Benefits gained by the busload
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly clear that companies planning a significant new development, such as bringing together staff from several different locations at a single site, should take account of transport factors before submitting their application for planning permission. They must consider how employees will reach the development, and how the development will tie in with existing transport provision, such as bus routes. Developments aligned with existing public transport provision are likely to be more successful than those that are not.
