Minding your own business
Article Abstract:
Medium-sized surveying companies in the UK often have problems with business management due to the lack of managerial expertise and the failure of the partners to make decisions. Smaller companies are easier to run with only a few people in the position to take decisions whilst many larger companies have introduced external managers who have managerial experience. In some companies the more successful property consultants want to take management roles even though they may not have sufficient expertise. Poor business management can reduce company profitability.

Article Abstract:
American clients wishing to lease business premises in the UK may be able to negotiate advantageous deals if the landlord wants the status of their business at a specific location. Surveyors acting for American clients must be prepared to explain the contract in detail and point out where terms may differ from US leases. Contracts are often agreed in less time in the US therefore clients should be warned negotiations may take longer in the UK. Landlords may demand extra information, such as bank guarantees, because the proposed tenants are foreign.

Leaks that will sink the boat
Article Abstract:
The chartered surveying industry must work towards stopping publicity about possible deals before they have been agreed. The spread of inaccurate information reflects a low standard of behaviour which can only cause a loss of reputation for surveyors in general. Surveyors must show that they are as professional as the many bankers and accountants who are using their expertise in the property market. Leaking confidential information to the press must stop for whatever reason before it harms the profession irrevocably.
