Money can grow on trees
Article Abstract:
Some UK investors are considering converting unused agricultural land into woodlands for which they can receive grants, particularly as the farming industry has been experiencing a downturn. Some observers point out land purchased at between 600-800 pounds sterling per acre may make returns of 6% over a 10 year period. The Challenge Fund has been set up to help farmers in South West England and in Scotland to plant woodland. A number of life fund companies have been investing in woodland in the US. Fountain forestry has sold 72,000 acres of woodland for $36 million in 1997-98.

Pressure to perform
Article Abstract:
There are around 40 district and county councils in the UK which still own smallholdings. These cover a total of around 133,550ha, and are worth at least 300 million pounds sterling with sitting tenants. Local authorities have come under strong pressure from central government over recent years to justify the retention of smallholdings, and they are now having to decide whether to sell smallholdings off or rationalize them. Wholesale disposal of smallholdings is being opposed by the National Farmers Association and the Tenant Farmers Association.
