Plugged in for retail profits
Article Abstract:
UK spending on electrical goods rose by 11.1% to 12.8 billion pounds sterling in 1995 vs 1994, but the market is a fiercely competitive one. The sector is increasingly dominated by superstores: they make up only one in 20 of all electrical retail outlets, but represent over one third of total sales in the sector. Some 8 billion pounds of total sector sales come from specialist electrical retailers, with out-of-town superstores accounting for almost 2.8 billion pounds of this. The advantages of superstores include wider choice, advice and after-sales service.

Redressing the needs of the '90s shopper
Article Abstract:
Spending on clothing rose 4.5% in 1995, however retailers launched new season stock at the beginning of 1996 at markedly lower prices, indicating tough competition in the sector. Fashion retailers dominated space expansion during the late 1980s, but suffered due to the recession. Larger space users such as Marks & Spencer and Debenhams have continued expansion, maintaining pressure on the sector.Discount stores thrived during the recession, but now they are seeing falls in profit as they are vulnerable to increasing High Street rents.

Supermarkets sweep up
Article Abstract:
The UK's supermarket chains have expanded rapidly over recent years, and are now offering products which were previously sold by specialist food retailers, such as bakery and butchery goods. They have also established a very strong presence in non-food products such as magazines, books, videos and petrol. There has been a very negative impact on specialist retailers, with almost 13,000 small outlets having shut down since the mid-1980s.
