Property - value for money?
Article Abstract:
In 1993 the total return on direct property investment in the UK was 12.8%, compared with the negative returns delivered by bonds and equities. The improving prospects for rental growth means that property investment continues to offer long-term value in relation to other assets. The expected increase in gilt holdings resulting from the UK government's new minium solvency requirements for pension funds could mean that property as a safe investment will prove attractive to overseas investors.

Property is a good bet when gilts get risky
Article Abstract:
Investment in property offers UK investors very good prospects particularly as there are fears a return to high inflation will increase the risk premium on gilts. Gilts have been achieving very high returns since 1990, due to the decline in the risk premium and the decreasing inflation rate. Inflation may increase if pay in the public sector starts to rise. Gilts will also suffer from UK pension funds having to reorganize their portfolios in order to reduce the level of risk in their funds.
