Article Abstract:
There are now many cinema screens in Manchester, England. In the city centre alone, 44 cinema screens are set to open in the period to mid-2001 at the Great Northern and Printworks developments. Some observers question whether the city can sustain further expansion in this sector. It is generally felt that Virgin's presence at Parrs Wood, Didsbury, England, is not too risky, but there is less confidence about Warner's decision to locate at Orbit's Outlet Mall development next to The Lowry in Salford Quays. Orbit Director Darren Jones emphasizes that there is a synergy between shopping and cinema visits.

Screen premiere
Article Abstract:
Modern cinemas must be comfortable and offer the additional attraction of restaurants, according to Cinemark International Pres Tim Warner. His company plans to establish a presence in the UK, using this as a base from which to expand in Europe and eastern Europe. He believes that straightforward multiplex cinemas will be replaced with a new concept he calls 'surround stadium screens.' He has only been in the UK a short time, but has already encountered difficulties with obtaining planning approval.

Moving pitches
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for leisure operators in the UK to choose town centre sites for multiplex cinemas, rather than out-of-town sites. This is partly because the government is taking a tougher stance on out-of-town development. Developing multiplex cinemas in town centres presents significant challenges, particularly in terms of cost. Land values are higher in town centres, and unit construction costs are also greater than for out-of-town sites.
