Article Abstract:
The Welsh economy experienced a strong recovery in 1999 as a result of booming global demand and high levels of consumer spending. This has already led to higher investment levels in South Wales. In Cardiff, Wales, the service sector is enjoying strong growth, especially in telecommunications and business services. In Swansea, Wales, office availability has dropped by 20% from 1998. A number of large retail and leisure schemes are planned in towns including Neath, Wales, and Barry, Wales. There is now a shortage of high quality industrial accommodation in South Wales, prompting competitive bidding.

Article Abstract:
Birmingham, England, is gaining an increasingly positive international reputation, as reflected in the decision to hold the 1998 G8 conference at the city's International Convention Centre. However, there are still problems with attracting investment to the city. In 1997, 658 companies employing 14,539 people moved into the city, but 814 firms employing 16,942 left it. Retail investment is being boosted by developments by Land Securities and Hammerson, but there are no similar office developments.

Article Abstract:
The property market in Peterborough, England, saw a strong revival in 1997. Industrial take-up reached 78,965 sq mt, and rents are likely to rise to become more in line with those in neighbouring towns in 1998. There is still a relatively large supply of industrial space, but most of it is former development corporation space which is not particularly attractive. There were a number of significant deals in the office property sector in 1997, and retail rents have begun to rise.
