In his short story 'The Decline and Fall of the Episcopal Church (in the Year of Our Lord 1952), Peter Taylor explores the relation between social class and religious affiliation in a small Southern town. The destruction of the Episcopal church represents the decline of the upper classes as a power in the town.

The author examines Flannery O'Connor's use of tornadoes in three of her stories. O'Connor's stories examine the sordid characters and corrupt societies and the author believes she uses tornadoes in the stories to clean away the evil so that what is good has a chance to start again.
