German unification: concepts of identity in poetry from the east and west
Article Abstract:
German poetries from east and west during 1989/90 are analyzed to express what German unification means for individual and national identity. The poems pinpoint some of the reasons for and effects of the disparate identity constructs that spill prevail, and also help to cast a new light on the still unsolved problems of German unification.

The claims that Germany has always failed at revolution in Holger Teschke's play 'Berliner November: Ein deutscher Bilderbogen nach Motiven aus Alfred Doblins November 1918' are discussed. This play was written in 1987, two years before Germany was to break this pattern.

The theme of the migrant author trying to find and reconcile a split identity in Franco Biondi's novel 'Die Unversohnlichen oder im Labyrinth der Herkunft' is discussed. Biondi tries to question the language of the majority from the standpoint of a non-native speaker.
