Making history: the state's intervention in urban religious disputes in north-western provinces in the early nineteenth century
Article Abstract:
The role of the British authorities in mediating religious conflicts in nineteenth-century India was discussed. The British were content to let traditional religious practices in certain locality as they had first encountered them. This, however, presupposed that they were knowledgeable of local religious festivities and sensitivities. The two main religious conflicts encountered by the British were the scheduling of religious festivals and the slaughter of cows by Muslims.

The technology of sanitation in colonial Delhi
Article Abstract:
The challenges colonial administrators faced when developing new sanitation technologies for the clean up of Delhi are examined. The author argues the in pre-modern times manual sweepers were expected to keep the city clean, however by the late 19th century they were unable to meet the demand and refuse became a hazard. The administration attempted to develop new technologies but usually intensified labor and dumped the sewage into landfills.
