On May 10, 1908, Anna Jarvis presided over the first Mothers Day celebration, at John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. Jarvis founded Mothers Day in honor of her beloved mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, who gave birth to 11 children, only four of whom survived into adulthood.
