Narrative excess without a cause: the institutional reception of Hollywood family melodrama in 1950s Finland
Article Abstract:
Many US motion picture melodramas exhibited in Finland during the 1950s were regarded by Finnish critics as excessively American and therefore unbelievable. Many critics praised 'Picnic' and 'Giant' for having what they regarded as European elements, demonstrating how elitist bias prevents appreciation of thematic and stylistic innovations.

Article Abstract:

In films such as 'La Strada,' 'Viva Zapata!,' 'Lawrence of Arabia,' and 'Zorba the Greek,' Quinn portrayed impulsive, aggressive, womanizing men.
