Oedipe mal entendu: langage et reconnaissance dans 'Le Malentendu' de Camus
Article Abstract:
Albert Camus' 'Le Malentendu' has an Oedipal theme. The absence of the father and the silence around this absence are noticeable from the beginning of the work. The reader knows only that the father has died recently and this could be read as the symbolic death of a rival father implicit in the Oedipal complex. Reading the play in a Lacanian way shows that man falls prey to desire by realizing the necessity of language but that the use of language is in vain and does not bring about any knowledge. Political or personal: the role of the Chenoua landscape in Camus's 'La Mort heureuse.'(Critical Essay)
Article Abstract:
The character Mersault becomes united with the mythic landscape of Algeria in Camus's 'La Mort heureuse.' Postcolonial, orientalist interpretations of Camus's fiction, however, promote a sociopolitical agenda while neglecting the subjective, personal aspects of the work.
