On German studies today
Article Abstract:
Effective, meaningful study of German culture, language and literature requires two primary criteria. Students should be provided with access to the various forms of the language and be given tools necessary for critical analysis of German texts. Although prior study has focused on the 18th-century concept of knowledge through aesthetics, this is too limiting a structure for thorough analysis.

German studies strikes again

Issues are discussed regarding the diversity in approach among universities teaching German studies in the US, the importance of preserving this approach and also of integrating the negative aspects of German history and Austrian and Swiss literature in the curriculum.

Issues are discussed regarding studying the literature of the sizable Afro-German community as a way of appealing to African-Americans. This approach could include study-abroad programs relating to the population to be served.
