Our predicament, our prospects

Issues are discussed regarding the decline in numbers of American college students studying German literature as part of an epochal migration away from the study of humanities are discussed. Professors in the field should accept that German can never win a game of pure numbers and return to the literary core of their field.

Prospects for German

The necessity of public outreach, an approach which may counteract the decline in students of Germanfor today's German professor is discussed. Creative thinking in course design and an improvement in the relationship with feeder high schools are called for.
