The Company army and rural society: the Invalid Thanah 1780-1830
Article Abstract:
The East India Company reinforced its control on its territories through the institution of the Invalid Thanah. The Invalid Thanahs were settlements of the invalid soldiers who had served the Company army. Soldiers were classified as invalid due to old age or disabilities. The Invalid Thanahs were used by the Company to encroach on the territories of the Mughal Empire, control local chieftains, subvert the power of neighboring Indian states and expand the Company's economic base.

The colonial state and constructions of Indian identity: an example on the northeast frontier in the 1800s
Article Abstract:
The British colonial rule in India shaped that country's national identity in ways subtle as well as obvious. Most notably, it spread the rule of law and uniformity, and promoted concepts of government that led directly to the formation of a national consciousness and to ideas of self-government that, in turn, led to colonialism's overthrow. The effects on the Naga hill district are discussed in detail.
