The Wanli context of the "Courtesan's Jewel Box" story
Article Abstract:
"The Courtesan's Jewel Box" is an especially well-known story of the tragic figure Du Shiniang. It is one of the most significant portrayals of a woman in Chinese literature. The 17th-century author to whom it is attributed, Song Maocheng, wished to live and teach the ancient chivalrous values of heroism, loyalty, disdain for material rewards, and providing help to those who needed it. The Wanli period (1573-1620) was characterized by literary interest in courtesan culture.
