Women at war: The Civil War diaries of Floride Clemson and Cornelia Peake McDonald
Article Abstract:
The published journals of Floride Clemson and Cornelia Peake McDonald are about two courageous and spirited women, one a pampered belle and the other an overworked mother of nine, mapping the American Civil War through their own personal anxieties and concerns. Among the first to break the silence in the wake of war atrocities, these Civil War diarists wrote their stories of suffering and survival that inspire and sustain readers in the twenty-first century as well.
