The UK sold 5 billion pounds sterling worth of defence equipment abroad in 1995, and held 20% of the world export market. The country's defence sector employs 400,000 people, according to the department of trade and industry. The largest UK arms exporter is British Aerospace, which receives 2 billion pounds sterling a year from the 1985 20 billion pounds sterling Al Yamamah arms-for-oil deal alone. The second-largest UK arms exporter, GEC-Marconic, saw sales from electronic and defence systems rise to 3 billion pounds sterling in 1995.

City airport clears runway to attempt new take-off
Article Abstract:
London City Airport has an extended runway for long-range aircraft but it handled only 200,000 passengers in 1992. Owner John Mowlem, the construction company, forecasts 400,000 passengers by 1993. The runway extension permits BAe 146 'whispering jets' and other long range aircraft to use the airport, increasing the airport's range from 250 to 1,000 miles. The Limehouse Link in east London and the Beckton extension of the Docklands Light Railway will shorten the trip to central London.

Blair's business jamboree becomes PR man's festival

The UK Labour party is making considerable efforts to gain support among business leaders. However, attendance at a recent conference for the business community was poor, with more PR men and women attending than business executives. The party made a number of promises to business, including ensuring that the UK retains a central role in Europe, keeping inflation low and maintaining strict control over borrowing and spending.
