1.5bn deals help revive PFI
Article Abstract:
Traditionally, contractual disputes between the UK National Health Service (NHS) and contractors have created problems for the UK government's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in the health sector, but the scheme to encourage private sponsorship in public projects has been given a boost with the awarding of a GB 520mn contract for a new hospital in Wythenshawe, south Manchester to a consortium led by Alfred McAlpine, the UK construction group. Under the terms of the 35 year deal, the consortium, also including WS Atkins, UK project manager, will build and maintain an acute care unit with 320 beds and a mental unit with 77 beds, and both are due to open in 2001.

The mall that ate Manchester
Article Abstract:
The Trafford Centre, a shopping mall due to open on the outskirts of Manchester, England, on Sep 10, 1998, has already attracted considerable controversy. The development, which cost 600 million pounds sterling, has three miles of shops, and is expected to attract 30 million visitors a year. Some observers believe that it will have a negative impact on retailers in nearby towns, while others feel that it will attract shoppers from outside the area, thus benefiting local businesses. The development is being promoted as offering attractions for the whole family, including a cinema and a bowling alley.
