A Government policy stolen from King Canute
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems to be loath to give any assistance at all to single-parent families, as it feels that to do so would be interpreted as condoning such families and contributing to the collapse of traditional family life. It is undoubtedly right to emphasise the virtues of the traditional family structure, but it is wrong to penalise single-parent families financially, thus placing members of such families under even greater stress. The government should accept that reducing financial support for single-parent families will not stop the rise in the number of these families.

Social change is best done in small, reversible steps
Article Abstract:
There are still some uncertainties about the health implications of smoking cannabis and about the possible repercussions of the legalization of cannabis. However, there are strong arguments in favour of the decriminalization of cannabis in the UK, and public opinion generally supports this move. The government would be best advised to make progress towards decriminalization very gradually. The first stage would probably be to announce that national police policy will be for police to issue warnings to cannabis users, rather than charging them.

What the archives reveal about stolen treasures
Article Abstract:
Jews across the areas of Europe which where occupied by the Nazis during the second world war had their assets confiscated and their businesses were subjected to forced sales, according to recently released archive records. Discriminatory taxes were imposed on them, they were forced to make large payments to secure emigration or avoid deportation, and their businesses were boycotted. It has become clear that there was considerable collaboration in individual countries in the seizing of Jewish assets.
