A disagreement on tactics, not strategy
Article Abstract:
The government is trying hard to play down the continued disagreement between the chancellor and the governor of the Bank of England over interest rates. However, some observers believe that this is in fact a very serious issue. They claim that the government is sticking to an inflation target which the chancellor has effectively abandoned, and that eventually political considerations will force the government to drop its strong anti-inflationary stance. As the next general election approaches, the chancellor will find it increasingly hard to approve any further rise in interest rates.

The German role model frays at the edges
Article Abstract:
Germany is often seen as representing a strong economic and social role model. However, UK economists are now beginning to realise that German-style capitalism may not be the best approach for the UK. Furthermore, recent research indicates that Germany itself is experiencing problems. New statistics indicate that Germany's economic recovery is now slowing down, and there are growing concerns about longer-term structural difficulties.
