Patrick O'Brian, 79, wrote a series of novels about naval life in the Napoleonic Wars. He recreates the atmosphere of the 18th century for his characters Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon. He knows the period so well, he considers he is writing about living people. O'Brian was born in Ireland but grew up in England after his mother died. He was often ill with a lung complaint, for which he spent much time sailing. He has written about 21 novels, biographies of Picasso and Joseph Banks, and done translations.

Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood, 51, is a poet and university teacher who started writing at 17. She oriinally intended to be a painter. 'The Circle Game,' her first poetry volume won the Governor-General's Award in 1966. She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1985 with 'The Handmaid's Tale.' Atwood was born in Ottowa and lived in northern Quebec and Ontario. She read English and philosophy at Toronto university. She taught in universities to finance her writing, taking posts in various cities.
