A legend in her own landscape
Article Abstract:
Famous American artist Georgia O'Keefe, who died in 1983 aged 99, was considered a transcendentalist, but in 1993 her talent is doubted. Her work is effective in reproduction, but the actual paintings are of medium size, flat and dull. They are adequate illustrations, but misunderstand scale. Transcendentalists should produce images so large that they cannot be completely viewed, which spread beyond the field of vision to convey the vastness of nature.

A fine headstone for an artist's way of life
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in St Ives, Cornwall, England, can display 70 paintings and 20 sculptures. The attractive building was designed by Eldred Evans and David Shalev to blend international modernism with a sense of nature. In the Lower Terrace gallery the paintings compete with the oceanic panorama. The local work exhibited is charming but not first-rate. Patronising captions prevent the pictures from making their own statements.

'The Cezanne on view in Paris is a complicated, uneasy figure, driven by anxiety as much as anything.' (Grand Palais, Paris, France)
Article Abstract:
The Grand Palais in Paris, France, is currently holding a large retrospective exhibition of the works of French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne. The works selected show him as a complicated, uneasy person, with a high degree of anxiety in his character. The exhibition is so large that it inevitably humanises Cezanne, showing his weaknesses and strange quirks of character.
