The master miniaturist of the Baroque
Article Abstract:
The final weekend of the 1999 Aldeburgh Festival, the first under the artistic direction of Thomas Ades, will include three concerts featuring the work of composer Francois Couperin, who lived between 1668 and 1733. He composed a range of church music, including motets and litanies for solo voices and continuo, along with four collections of chamber suites for two to four players, around 240 short harpsichord pieces and some secular songs. There are problems associated with coming to terms with the work of a composer whose essence is found in a series of miniatures.

Four minutes that shook R3
Article Abstract:
Some observers have been critical of the decision to persuade Paul Gambaccini to leave Classic FM and present a programme of classical music on Radio 3. They feel that he is not closely associated enough with 'serious' classical music, and that his American accent is not formal enough for Radio 3. However, his presence should not be blamed for Radio 3's problems. The main mistake being made by those responsible for Radio 3 is their failure to open up more broadcasting time to independent tender.
