Explosive stuff of life
Article Abstract:
Around 75 million tons of ammonium nitrate are manufactured throughout the world every year, 90% of it is used as a fertilizer and 10% in explosives. It provides the nitrogen that plants need to grow well. There have been many accidents with ammonium nitrate, ships or lorries catching fire and exploding. The 1918 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Frits Haber for his discovery of a process for turning air into ammonium nitrate.

The element of surprise
Article Abstract:
Scientists have been investigating water extensively for many centuries, but their understanding of it is still only limited. The water molecule is extremely simple, being made up of two hydrogen atoms attached to an oxygen in a V-shaped arrangement, but it behaves in a very complex way. It boils at different temperatures according to air pressure, and in some circumstances behaves both like a gas and a liquid.
