South Africa has 278 negotiations forums including the multi-party constitutional council which set the date Apr 27, 1994, for the first democratic elections. The National Economic Forum (NEF) represents organised labour, government and organised business to develop a national strategy for sustained economic growth. NEF met with government ministers and leaders of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Jul 1993 to discuss constructive plans for developing public work schemes, unemployment insurance, training and other social initiatives.

Joe Slovo, the former general secretary of the South African Communist Party wo died recently, was held in great esteem by black South Africans. He was one of the few political leaders in the country whose behaviour in private was the same as his behaviour in public, and he was an unassuming, compassionate man. However, he was also a brilliant political strategist, and he played a key role in ending apartheid in South Africa.
