A risk worth taking?
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for patients to wish to become involved in clinical trials, the main method for testing drugs and some other treatments before they are made widely available. However, new drugs can sometimes prove to be worse or no better than existing treatments, and trials can present significant moral and ethical problems. The Consumer Advisory Group for Clinical Trials emphasizes that it is vital for people considering participating in a clinical trial to receive the right information.

Stress is a serious business
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the UK that stress plays a role in many physical and mental health problems. Stress can be very difficult to diagnose and treat, as it has a wide range of symptoms. Some people react to stress by fainting, while others experience disassociation, where the stressful events seem to be happening to someone else. The most severe reaction to stress is an abreactive attack, in which there is collapse, followed by breathing difficulties, thrashing of limbs and self injury.

Whispering voices, broken hearts
Article Abstract:
When people create barriers around themselves which prevent the release of emotions, physiological damage occurs as indigestion, ulcers or loss of voice. There may be physical damage to the vocal cords, which can be detected with a minute camera. Surgeons can rectify swollen folds or remove hard nodules, but the psychological problems must be treated or the problem will recur. Teachers and actors are more likely to suffer from psychosomatic disorders as they experience stress.
