A safe pair of hands? New Britain's new versifier could surprise us all
Article Abstract:
Poet Andrew Motion feels extremely honoured to have been appointed as the UK's Poet Laureate on a paid, 10-year tenure. He believes that being Poet Laureate is a very interesting and complex challenge for a poet. He is looking to diversify the responsibilities of the Poet Laureate, and plans to write about wider national issues. His appointment can be seen as part of a takeover of cultural life in the UK by the immediate post-world war two generation.

Confessions of a tease
Article Abstract:
Author Hanif Kureishi has developed a very mixed reputation. He appears to write solid biography, but this often turns out to be deceptive. He has always been attracted to mischief and provocation, and does not try to avoid scandal. His latest book of short stories, 'Midnight All Day,' which is to be published in early Nov 1999, features a range of acutely observed characters and offers further material for those seeking biographical information about him.
