Writer and critic Elizabeth Young was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1950. She gained a BPhil from York University, England, and taught art history at Lancaster University, England. She began contributing book reviews to Time Out in the early 1980s.

Poet Andrew Motion feels extremely honoured to have been appointed as the UK's Poet Laureate on a paid, 10-year tenure. He believes that being Poet Laureate is a very interesting and complex challenge for a poet. He is looking to diversify the responsibilities of the Poet Laureate, and plans to write about wider national issues. His appointment can be seen as part of a takeover of cultural life in the UK by the immediate post-world war two generation.
