A storm is blowing and Britain will be unable to avoid it. But what then?
Article Abstract:
The UK's imports are currently exceeding exports. This will have to be corrected at some point, with the pound falling in comparison with the euro and the dollar. This would have consequences including a return of inflationary pressure, with interest rates probably having to rise.

Admit it, Chancellor, real recession is now inevitable
Article Abstract:
Significant decline on financial markets inevitably means that the amount of credit available to ordinary Britons will be substantially cut. There will be a reduction in economic activity, and a recession will certainly emerge, despite government reassurances to the contrary. The risk of entering a real deflation is not yet very great, but such a development is already enough of a possibility for borrowers to focus on reducing debt.

Go out and spend. You won't pay more for Xmas presents
Article Abstract:
There are no signs of deflation in the UK, where Chancellor Gordon Brown predicts that underlying price rises will fall below the government's target of 2.5% in the first half of 1999 before coming back into line. However, real economic conditions seem to be closer to deflation than to inflation. High street retailers have introduced significant price reductions in autumn 1998, and the rise in house prices seems to be over. Developments of this kind make it possible to argue that inflation has come to an end.
