A tiger in the drawing-room
Article Abstract:
Crime novelist PD James does not feel that it is appropriate to reveal details about the most difficult parts of her life in public. She does not find it hard to write about things which she has never experienced but has imagined. She regards the writer as an observer who stands outside the narrative and provides an element of order and reason. She believes that her books are an attempt to create order out of disorder, reflecting the anxiety she experienced during her childhood.

Chucking out the chintz
Article Abstract:
Crime novelist Minette Walters greatly enjoys describing gory deaths, regarding these descriptions as a challenge. She has gained a strong insight into the minds of violent criminals through her work as a prison visitor, but never uses personal details in her work. She is very interested in certain forms of loneliness, feeling that the greatest loneliness is experienced by someone who is isolated in a crowd. Her work seems to combine a horror of death and a fascination with it.
