Academia's Bett noire
Article Abstract:
There could be considerable unrest in the UK higher education system in coming years if the government decides to ignore the Bett report on higher education pay, which calls for large pay rises for the lowest-paid lecturers and professors, but not for academics in mid-career. The report recommends that the government invests 380 million pounds sterling a year by 2002 to eliminate sex inequalities in higher education and boost the income of the underpaid. However, the government's comprehensive spending review makes no provision for pay rises above the predicted rate of inflation.
