Chorus master and conductor Alan Melville became a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, England. He began studying conducting and piano at the Royal College of Music in the late 1920s. After serving in the fire service in London, England, during the second world war, he took up the position of chorus master at Sadler's Wells Opera. He joined the BBC as one of three assistant chorus masters under Leslie Woodgate in 1950, and in the 1960s conducted works in concert for the BBC.

Paul Sacher
Article Abstract:
Conductor and music patron Paul Sacher formed the Basel Chamber Orchestra at the age of 20. He commissioned his first work, Conrad Beck's Fifth Symphony, at the age of 32, and subsequently founded the Zurich Collegium Musicum. He studied conducting with Felix Weingartner, and trained in musicology with Karl Nef. The most important of his commissions was Bartok's 'Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste.' He showed great loyalty to Swiss composers, but was not parochial.

Sir Georg Solti
Article Abstract:
Conductor Georg Solti took piano lessons from an early age, making his public debut at the age of 12. He studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and made his conducting debut in 1938. He took up conducting again after the second world war, and was Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera between 1946 and 1952. He took on the Principal Conductorship of L'Orchestre de Paris between 1971 and 1975, and continued to work well into retirement age.
