An inspector calls on privatised care
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems to be bowing to strong pressure from owners of private care homes for the elderly. A forthcoming White Paper on the social services is likely to state that local authorities should be less strict in regulating private care homes, and it is possible that moves will be made to sell off remaining council-controlled homes. Local councils point out that their resources for inspecting private care homes are already stretched extremely thinly, so they feel that they cannot be accused of inspecting private care homes too thoroughly.

How to collect your inheritance early
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common in the UK for elderly people to pass on their assets to their children before their death, fearing that it they fail to do so, they will be liable for the costs of long-term nursing home care, should this become necessary. Current legislation states that anyone with assets of more than 16,000 pounds sterling will be charged fees for care in a residential or nursing home. Some observers feel that it is unfair that these elderly people should deliberately place the burden of paying for their care on the taxpayer.

Turfing out the elderly in Middle England
Article Abstract:
There is growing resentment among the middle classes in the UK about the government's attitude towards the care of elderly people. New welfare arrangements are forcing families to use up all their savings to pay for nursing care, as now only 10% of the elderly are cared for in NHS hospitals. A crisis in care is rapidly approaching, and the government will soon be forced to admit that people will simply have to find money to care for elderly relatives themselves.
