It has been revealed that an appendix to the report into the police investigation of the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence contains the names and addresses of 40 informants and witnesses who gave confidential evidence to the investigation. The report has been widely circulated, thus placing the informants and witnesses at risk. They have now been offered police protection. Opposition MPs have seized on this error to question the credibility of the entire inquiry. In a further development, racist vandals splashed white paint on the memorial plaque to Lawrence. It was revealed that a security camera at the site was a dummy.

Soldiers recruited by violent far-right

An investigation into the activities of neo-Nazis by MI5, military police and the Special Branch has led to raids on the homes of more than 12 people. These people include one soldier serving with the Parachute Regiment and one serving with the King's Regiment. It is believed that the soldiers were recruited by Combat 18, a group of skinhead racists who have gained a reputation for extreme violence. This group's hardcore membership may be only around 40, with up to 80 or 90 others being called on as necessary.
