As if exams weren't enough of a lottery...
Article Abstract:
UK teachers are generally opposed to the concept of performance-related pay, which will be the subject of a forthcoming government Green Paper. They feel that it would be unfair to base their pay on the examination performance of their students, as they have no control over the quality of the students entering the school. Similarly, they believe that teaching is based on team work, and that rewarding some teachers and not others would therefore be unfair. However, many teachers feel that their pay should be related partly to their ability to show particular skills.

A simple lesson, but it gave my pupils hope. How do you value that, Mr Blair?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is to appeal to teachers to accept a system of performance-related pay. This is a misguided approach, as many of the successes associated with teaching cannot be quantified according to a standardized system. Most teachers are opposed to performance-related pay, recognizing that it would expose them to a burden of constant re-assessment and meeting ever-changing targets. Teachers would have to devote far too much time to paperwork and not enough to actually teaching.

Joined-up letters, at a stroke
Article Abstract:
Many schools in the UK are now taking different approaches to the teaching of handwriting from those which have been used in the past. The national curriculum states that children should be beginning to join letters by the age of seven, so most schools now encourage flowing letter formation from the very early stages of writing. Some schools teach an italic style, and most have formal practice sessions.
