BT lines up major US pact
Article Abstract:
An announcement is to be made in July 1998 by British Telecom (BT) in which it is predicted that it will detail a strategic alliance with the US long distance telecoms company AT&T. It is believed that the companies have agreed to form a joint venture to include their international businesses. It is known that BT are keen to launch its Concert subsidiary in the US market. Concert provide specialised telecoms services for multinational companies, and while it has been successful in Europe, the US market provides a much wider opportunity. There is a potential for conflict with AT&T in this area though. AT&T have a significant stake in the global telecoms alliance, World Partners, which offers a similar service to Concert. Also AT&T offer similar services through a joint venture with the Netherlands company Unisource. To forward the deal BT might have to wind up Concert and change existing customers to World Partners or AT&T could retire from Unisource and join Concert.

Bonfield calls for telecoms shake-up
Article Abstract:
In order to boost Europe's competitiveness in the converged telecoms and broadcasting industries in the 21st century, Sir Peter Bonfield, the chief executive of British Telecom has urged that the current outdated regulatory bodies be replaced with a regime which regulates four new markets; consumer equipment, distribution networks and their service provision and the creation of content. The proposed structure would mean that regulators would be able to monitor more effectively emerging new technologies where telephone services and broadcasting overlap. These include the Internet, mobile telephony and digital television. Whilst directed at European regulation, it is thought that Sir Peter's comments are a criticism of the UK government's decision earlier in 1998 to leave in place the existing regulatory structure, whereby Oftel is responsible for the telecoms industry.
