People who are not prepared to fit in with acceptable social patterns can find themselves in severe difficulties, according to Erin Pizzey. She founded the first-ever refuge for battered women, and went on to write 10 successful novels. However, she clashed with publishers and well-known feminists, and has now become poor and homeless. She had a difficult childhood, and it is possible that this sowed the seeds for her current misfortune.
