Battle of the brickmakers builds towards a climax
Article Abstract:
British and European monopoly regulators must rule on the question of competition between three British building materials companies, Steetley, Tarmac and Redland. The first two are proposing a joint venture which would form a local monopoly in the North of England. Redland has countered with a hostile bid for Steetley. These bids would have to be referred to both the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and, based on the turnover of the parent companies, to the European Commission monopoly regulators. The UK Trade Secretary wishes to decide on both bids.

Discounting a bull market
Article Abstract:
Stockbrokers and fund managers expect that the FT-SE 100 index of leading shares will finish 1993 at about the same level as 1992: 2,847.8. The market is not expecting an economic recovery. However, Smith New Court and Nomura predict a rise due to economic recovery. The public sector deficit could restrict the amount of cash for investment, which foreign investors could take up. Many expect targets to be reached by June after which there will be little progress.
