Medical research brings cancer survival closer
Article Abstract:
Cancer patients are now surviving longer than ever before because of two major medical developments, high-voltage radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Many rare forms of cancer like Hodgkin's disease are now mostly curable. Fewer advances have been made in treating the more common types of cancer and as the population ages, more cases of cancer are appearing. Preventive treatment is the aim for the future through experiments with new drugs and genetic research to identify predisposition.

The right vitamin - if you can get it
Article Abstract:
B-group vitamin folic acid helps prevent spina bifida. A Department of Health publication recommends the vitamin is added to bread and cereals. Pregnant women should take a folic acid supplement until the 12th week. A Medical Research Council study in 1991 found that 4 milligrams a day should reduce by 75% the chance of a woman with one spina bifida child having another. Women who have not had affected pregnancies need a dose of 0.4 milligrams.
