Blair's chance to lead in Europe
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is keen to play a leading role in Europe. His status in Europe would be greatly enhanced if he were to speak out strongly in favour of European monetary union at a time when there is great disarray on this issue in France and Germany. However, his decision to stand back from the European monetary union crisis is probably a wise one. Other European Union leaders are aware that he wields considerable political power and that he wants to transform the UK's relations with the rest of the European Union.

Blair's deafening silence on the euro
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has not tackled the issue of the European single currency with much conviction. Like the Conservative party, it has decided that the UK should wait before making a decision about whether to join. It has stated that the decision will be made on economic, rather than political, grounds, and that the UK's national interest will be a key deciding factor. The general impression is that Labour party leader Tony Blair is rather unenthusiastic about a single currency.
