The shortlist for the Turner Prize for contemporary art has been announced: photographer Richard Billingham, conceptual artist Martin Creed, filmmaker Issac Julien, and junk constructor Mike Nelson. The Turner Prize exhibition runs from November 7, 2001 to January 20, 2002, at the Tate Britain.

Thousands of young carers get help

The UK government has announced its determination to ensure that the needs of those caring for elderly or disabled relatives are met. In particular, the government wishes to assist young carers. It is estimated that more than 850,000 people provide care for more than 50 hours a week, with three-fifths receiving no regular visitor-support services. The government has announced a range of measures to assist carers, including 140 million pounds sterling to provide respite care.
