New Chancellor, old ways
Article Abstract:
The coalition government likely to be formed in Germany by Gerhard Schroder's Social Democrats and the Greens is set to have a significant impact on a country that has for so long been dominated by Helmut Kohl. The new government may introduce a more normal, liberal citizenship law, thus allowing more long-term foreign residents to gain German citizenship. However, it may not implement the economic reforms that German business leaders regard as essential. It is possible that Germany under Schroder will establish closer links with the UK.

The moral leader of Europe
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel still often gives the impression that he regards himself as a writer who became a political leader by chance. He has undoubtedly made mistakes, and not all his actions have been approved by his fellow Czechs. However, it is clear that the Czech Republic is very fortunate to still have him as its leader. He always speaks out for high moral standards and tough goals in public life, and encourages fellow Czechs to show civic responsibility and tolerance.
