Breaking out of the mould

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the poor have inherited genes which predispose them to mental illness, low intelligence levels and criminality. This being the case, then making more money available to the poor would not bring any significant benefits. This argument overlooks the vital role of the environment in determining human behaviour. If it is true that some behaviours are partly determined by a person's genetic inheritance, then it is still extremely important what the environment is like, as this will influence how these built-in behaviours are expressed in practice.

Who are Peter's friends?

Article Abstract:

UK government minister Peter Mandelson works extremely hard to attract publicity, and makes it clear that he has substantial political ambitions. He is known to be arrogant in his treatment of journalists who have angered him, but can also be amusing and charming. One reason why he has attracted so much negative media coverage seems to be suspicions that he may be homosexual. However, the main reason for him being demonized is his relation to Prime Minister Tony Blair and the ambiguities of a Labour party which has apparently severed links with its socialist origins.

The origin of specious argument

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive media coverage in the UK of theories indicating that there could be a gene responsible for depression. In fact, these theories are hard to prove convincingly. There is much more evidence to suggest that depression is the result of environmental factors. Women who were neglected or abused as children are more prone to depression than those who were not. Poverty, loss of a parent before the age of 16, parental psychiatric problems and parental conflict are all associated with depression in women, but only when linked with neglect or abuse.
