CANADA: ATLANTIC FISH STOCKS NOT RECOVERING
Article Abstract:
According to research conducted by a marine biologist at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, Jeffrey Hutchings, and published in the journal Nature, north Atlantic fish stocks are not recovering from decades of overfishing. The analysis of 90 fish stocks found that only herring and related species, which mature early in life, were showing any signs of recovering in numbers. The Atlantic cod has been classified as "vulnerable" since 1996 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Other species listed in risk categories include the yellowtail flounder, Atlantic halibut, Bering wolffish, haddock and Pacific sardine.

Floodwaters bring hope of a revival in salmon stocks
Article Abstract:
Catches of wild salmon on most rivers in the UK have fallen significantly since 1996. Furthermore, the proportion of grilse, which have spent only one winter at sea in shallow coastal waters and have lower reproductive success than smolts, which return to breed at around four years old, being caught by fishermen has risen, reflecting an increase in grilse numbers in UK rivers. Scientists now believe that climatic factors, rather than poaching, are responsible for falling salmon stocks. Recent flooding may boost salmon numbers, as flood waters hide salmon from predators and make it easier for them to reach gravel beds.

WORLD: GLOBAL WARMING CONFIRMED
Article Abstract:
The earth is significantly warmer now than it was 150 years previously, according to a study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. An examination of ice records between 1846 and 1995 shows that the annual cycle of the initial frees occurs 8.7 days later now and the initial ice break-up 9.8 days later. The findings reaffirm the view that global warming is the result of carbon dioxide being released during the 19th century from industrialisation. Researchers envisage that greenhouse gases will double over the coming 30 years, possibly shifting the climate boundaries for fish up to 300 miles northwards.
