Chechnya refugees caught in crossfire
Article Abstract:
Russian artillery and warplanes continue to inflict extensive damage on towns and villages around Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, Russia. Many Chechens are being driven out of their homes, and are now trying to escape to Ingushetia. They report that they are also being terrorized by the Wahhabis, Islamic fundamentalists who are regarded as belonging to the Arabic rather than the Chechen tradition. Russia has stated that it is attacking Chechnya to eliminate Islamic fundamentalist terrorism.

The Northern Alliance has won, so don't expect it to give up power
Article Abstract:
It will be extremely difficult for the Northern Alliance to achieve stability in Afghanistan, as it has only a narrow power base. However, ordinary Afghans are desperate to avoid further conflict, and external pressures on Afghanistan are likely to diminish.
