China draws the drug giants
Article Abstract:
Glaxo opened a pharmaceutical factory at Chongqing in Sichuan, China, in Oct 1991. The 50:50 venture between Glaxo and the State employs 150. Glaxo, which has the largest share of the imported drugs market, was attracted by the local market. It is introducing sales and marketing functions. The most popular drugs are antibiotics and anti-cancer compounds. The pricing mechanism for imports gives the state-owned importer a profit margin. Drug companies seek convertibility of Chinese currency.

Channel ports see gloom at end of the tunnel
Article Abstract:
The end of P & O ferries to Boulogne, France has affected the town's trade, 1/4 of which depended on cross-Channel traffic. The port provides about 1/2 the town's employment. Calais, France gains business as it expects 14 million passengers in 1993. The Channel tunnel could affect Calais as tourists may shop in the tunnel shopping centre and not visit the town. Motorways to link with the rest of Europe but bypass Calais also lose business for the town.
